Key Background
Samsung is pre-installing intelligent features into home appliances to better serve consumers in convenience. Its $1,099 Bespoke AI Jet Ultra cordless stick vacuum includes an LCD display control panel that reminds consumers of new calls and texts. It features 400AW suction and 100 minutes of battery life and includes an auto-empty charging station.
In the laundry sector, Samsung’s Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo washer/dryer that costs $3,099 has a 7-inch touchscreen where one can receive calls directly. The machine also comes with automatic detergent dispensing and automatic door opening after the cycle.
All these innovations come under the Samsung AI Home philosophy of installing 7- or 9-inch LCD panels in different appliances such as wall ovens and smart refrigerators. The panels can be used as control panels and can connect with other smart devices in the home through the SmartThings platform, enabling applications such as music, weather, and cooking.
While these innovations are meant to make easy things easier, there are concerns of obsolescence, the risk of failure, and the likelihood of advertisements on such screens. Samsung has not yet alleviated such concerns.
