Tata Boosts iPhone Manufacturing in India with Major Expansion at Hosur Plant

Prime Highlights :

Tata Electronics to double iPhone case production at Hosur plant.

Upgrade in accordance with Apple’s plan to expand India as a principal manufacturing base.

Key Facts :

Existing production: 50,000 iPhone cases per month.

Target capacity: 100,000 units before Apple’s September product launch.

Key Background :

Tata Electronics, the group’s largest production unit, will expand its iPhone case output at its Tamil Nadu-based Hosur plant by leaps and bounds. Currently manufacturing approximately 50,000 enclosures per month, the company believes it can increase this to 100,000 by Apple’s next release scheduled in September 2025. This is in line with both increasing importance of Tata within Apple’s global supply chain and India becoming an ideal source for electronics manufacturing.

The acquisition is in the wake of Tata’s strategic acquisition in the electronics sector. The firm purchased Wistron’s iPhone factory in Karnataka in 2023, the initial Indian firm to produce iPhones directly. Tata Electronics acquired a 60% stake in Pegatron Technology India recently, tightening its hold further in Apple manufacturing supply. The acquisitions demonstrate Tata’s interest in establishing a vertically integrated chain of manufacturing for Apple devices in India.

Apple, however, has been intent on diversifying its supply base and decreasing Chinese manufacturing dependence. CEO Tim Cook has pointed out the strategic merit of India, with more than half of iPhone sales in the U.S. by mid-2025 forecasted to come from Indian manufacturing facilities. It is not just good for supply chains worldwide, but it draws on India’s expanding technical manpower pool.

Hosur plant enlargement will also trigger significant employment creation opportunities. Its current strength of around 15,000 would be expected to rise to nearly 28,000 when the plant is producing at full load. The decision makes Tata Electronics a key driving force for India’s electronic production program and testament to the government’s initiative toward promoting indigenous manufacture with initiatives like ‘Make in India’ as well as the PLI scheme.
